When the Answer Is in the Jaw

Some bite problems aren't about the teeth at all. They come from how the upper and lower jaws meet. For older teens and adults withPage 5: Adult Orthodontics severe bite issues that orthodontic treatment alone can't fully address, Sander Orthodontic Arts works in partnership with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Dr. Sander aligns the teeth; the surgeon corrects the bite at the skeletal level.

How do I know if I might need surgical orthodontics?

Only an exam and imaging can tell you. Patients often come to us with a significant underbite, overbite or open bite, or with a jaw that looks out of balance. Dr. Sander will explain whether braces or aligners can get you there, or whether a surgical partnership will give you a better, more stable result.

Who is it for?

Adults and older adolescents whose jaws have finished growing. For younger children, early treatment can sometimes guide jaw growth instead.

What does the process look like?

  1. Consultation and records. Exam, digital imaging and a candid conversation about your goals.

  2. Orthodontic preparation. Braces or aligners position the teeth so they'll fit together after surgery.

  3. Surgery. Performed by the oral surgeon we partner with.

  4. Finishing. We fine-tune your bite after healing.

  5. Retention. A retainer protects the result.

Is this cosmetic or functional?

Both. Correcting the jaw relationship is about how you bite and chew, and it often brings the face into a more natural balance. Orthodontics is an art as much as a science; surgical cases are where both matter most.
